| Known as the Southeast Comprehensive Health Center, the 143,200 sf Hubert H. Humphrey Comprehensive Health Center is a satellite of the King/Drew Medical Center. It is considered to be a forerunner in the first generation of comprehensive community health care centers in the nation. The center was programmed and designed according to the medical team concept and consists of team modules. The center consists of radiology and pediatric units complete with 68 examination rooms, a 30-bed emergency care unit, a 60,000 square foot mental health clinic, child care facility, and a cafeteria and community auditorium. The design provided a prototype which was later emulated by other traditional medical centers. Generous use of descriptive graphics, culturally sensitive interior design considerations, the provision of natural lighting through interior courts and skylight a and the efficient surfacing materials comprise some of the feature of this smooth-surfaced, poured in place concrete structure. |
