Siemens Industry, Inc. retained JGM to provide 30% Bridging
Documents as part of an overall Design/Build project for a new, 15,000
SF building to house baggage screening facilities for Terminal 5 at
Los Angeles International Airport. The project is unique, constructed
over an existing terminal and located on an active airfield apron area
with height and floor limitations in conjunction with below grade existing
utilities, foundations and baggage claim carousels. In order to design
the building, in-depth research and field verification of existing foundations,
utilities, baggage handling equipment in Terminal 5 as well as confirming
existing conditions in the adjacent Terminal 6 facility was required.
Constructability issues included the integration of new
columns into an existing structural system without imposing new loads
on the existing structural systems, as well as coordinating with existing
tunnels and utilities on the AOA. Working with LAWA and Delta Airlines,
a tightly chorographed construction phasing plan was developed that
maintained airport operations, and facilitated material delivery. The
project was Design/Build with JGM developing 30% bridging documents
performing building code analysis, constructability review, site investigation,
and coordination with multiple airport and municipal agencies. JGM also
facilitated review and approval by City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs
and documentation for environmental determination/clearance.
