Union Station

Union Station, “the last of America’s great rail stations,” was originally built in 1939 and was fully restored in 1995 when a subway station was added beneath the facility. The site is a thriving commercial district with the completion of the station connecting various branches of Metro System with Metro Link Commuter Rail and Amtrak and the city bus grid.

As part of a multi disciplined joint-venture team JGM provided contract document preparation for the station and ancillary facilities. Train station coordination and track design were key elements of this design this passenger friendly station. Most tracks were replaced with 100 pound welded rail and new crossovers, catenaries, masts and wayside switching to provide smoother rides.

In addition to architectural design services, the effort included civil and structural engineering and urban design. Status layouts assessed the adequacy of the vehicular and pedestrian circulation and extensive provisions throughout construction. Union Station has more than 200,000 sf of station and serves vital east, south, and north bound destinations. The firm enabled construction estimates to be programmed within two percent of the projected cost of the project.
