Health planning services were provided for the acute unit at Martin Luther King, Jr./Charles Drew Medical Center to assure comprehensive community use of this South Los Angeles premier health care facility. In addition, JGM provided architectural design, engineering and construction management services for the 394-bed hospital expandable to 760 beds. Since the facility has an exceptionally large outpatient unit, clinical and diagnostic centers are located on the same level as respective inpatient departments, consolidating staff and equipment for similar ambulatory and inpatient services. Each nursing floor contains three nursing modules, which average 96 beds per station planned so that each room has direct exterior natural illumination without interventing lightwells.
