This new Yard and Shop facility was designed as a highly efficient, state-of-the-art Maintenance-of-Way (MOW) Facility to be located at the Green Line Imperial site in the City of Los Angeles, CA. Special attention was given to integrating the operating authoritys maintenance standards and routines into the facilities design.
Site layout was of prime consideration as the team choreographed car movement throughout the yard ensuring easy train movement between mainline and support facilities such as the shop building and car wash station. Of prime concern was the ability of trains to run around one another and bypass other yard activities. Throughout the yard adequate space was maintained between tracks for cleaning and inspection. All these factors had to be present while optimizing the tight site to maximize train storage.
The MOW was designed to contain approximately 34,000 sf of useable floor space to service the light rail vehicles. Working closely with client staff, several layouts were prepared in the conceptual phase to refine the efficiency of on-site operations. A program report was prepared identifying building space needs, space proximity requirements and infrastructure utility and space access needs. All of these considerations are assembled into a cohesive, functional floor plan. Worker safety was of paramount importance to the Team. Many of the shop designs included extensive use of safety interlocking and controls, as well as innovative designs for fall protection, slip protection and separation of public space from work activities.
